Mountain of Mistake to Share

“Mom, the cookie dough doesn’t seem quite right. I don’t think I can scoop it for baking,” my eight-year-old chef stated.

Eyebrow cocked, I looked up from what I was doing.

“Okay, let’s go check it out.”

Sure enough, our commercial-sized mixing bowl was nearly full of a runny batter that did not resemble normal, scoop-able cookie dough.

“Hmm…let’s look at the recipe and see what happened.”

It turns out that a parenthesis from one column had been read as the number one on the other column, turning the number six into a sixteen. Sixteen eggs had been added to an already huge batch of monster cookies! I gasped.

At this moment, SuperDad stepped onto the scene, noted my wide-eyes and stricken look, assessed the situation, and said, “No problem. We can fix this.”

Four small jars of peanut butter, 18 eggs, and 27 cups of oats later, we had TWO commercial-sized bowls of scoop-able cookie dough ready to hit the oven. We baked till we were sick of it. We froze dough balls. We shared containers of cookie dough with friends.

And we did not make that recipe again for a very, VERY long time.

If we turn to our Savior, He can take our messy mistakes, any mistakes, and help us through them. It may be overwhelming. It may take lots of time. It may be something you don’t ever want to repeat, but He can make “beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness”. (Isaiah 61:3)

I am also learning to share the joy that comes from fixing mistakes. “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over,” (Luke 6:38)…..like mountains of cookie dough.
